10 Very Easy Ways to Prevent High Blood Pressure
By Stephen Josephs

I have compiled a list of the top 10 easiest ways to prevent high blood pressure, here they are.

1. Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight, you are at higher risk for high blood pressure.

2. Eat fruits and Vegetables. A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, low in saturated fat and cholesterol are ways to prevent and reduce high blood pressure.

3. Eat less sodium (SALT). Eating less sodium will help prevent your blood pressure from rising. The recommended daily intake of sodium is approximately one teaspoon per day. Not per meal. Prepackaged meals are usually very high in sodium. Read all food labels.

4. Exercise. Having an active lifestyle. Regular physical activity 30 - 60 minutes a day, 5 days a week will help lower your blood pressure and help prevent high blood pressure.

5. Check your blood pressure regularly. Regular check-ups with your doctor are the best. Do not rely on the free blood pressure machines in stores. Your doctor will know what is the correct reading for you and your medical history.

6. Drink alcohol in moderation. Drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure. Limit how much you drink to no more than two drinks a day. Women should limit their alcohol to no more than one drink per day.

7. Reduce Stress. Stress can make your blood pressure rise and over time may contribute to the cause of high blood pressure.

8. Quit Smoking. According to research, people who smoke are more likely to develop high blood pressure.

9. Check your Water Softener. Water softeners are sometimes a hidden source of sodium in your water at home. If your water softener adds a lot of sodium to the water you drink, you might want to consider switching to a different water-purification system.

10. Take Care of Yourself. Lifestyle plays an important role in your blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication later in life.
